Is Disclosure Day real?

No. It is a 2026 Spielberg film, a work of fiction. Here is what the film shows, set against what governments have actually released.

Disclosure Day is fiction. It is a 2026 science fiction film from Universal Pictures, directed by Steven Spielberg from a screenplay by David Koepp. It opened in US theaters on June 12, 2026. Governments have set no day of disclosure. No official report has confirmed contact with non-human life.

The film arrived in a year when the real record was moving. In 2026 the US Department of War began releasing UAP files in batches, and the House voted for a fuller disclosure law. None of those releases shows what the film shows. The rest of this file sets the two side by side.

What is Disclosure Day about?

The film follows two people. Margaret Fairchild, played by Emily Blunt, is a TV weather presenter in Kansas City. Daniel Kellner, played by Josh O'Connor, is a cybersecurity expert and whistleblower who holds an archive of footage of alien encounters reaching back to the Roswell case of 1947. Colin Firth, Eve Hewson and Colman Domingo also star. The plot is a chase to get that evidence in front of the public before it can be buried (TheWrap, June 12, 2026).

It is a Universal Pictures release of an Amblin Entertainment production, runs 2 hours 25 minutes and is rated PG-13 (Rotten Tomatoes listing).

Is Disclosure Day based on a true story?

No. The characters and the plot are invented. Koepp has said he and Spielberg built the story on existing UFO lore on purpose, including the 1947 Roswell case and a well-known anecdote about Richard Nixon and the comedian Jackie Gleason (TheWrap). That anecdote comes from a secondhand account, and we found no official record of it.

Koepp told Collider that a scene of craft in formation dropping under the sea comes from what he called Navy lore. He said most of the film's reference events point to famous cases, and that one or two were made up (Collider, June 16, 2026). So the film borrows real names and dates, then tells a story that no record supports.

Is Disclosure Day based on a book?

No. Spielberg wrote a 40-page treatment in the summer of 2023 with a beginning, middle and end. Koepp turned it into the screenplay, and Spielberg holds the story credit (SlashFilm, June 12, 2026). There is no source novel.

What Disclosure Day shows compared with the public record
In the filmIn the public record
A single day when the hidden evidence reaches the public. No such day exists or has been announced. Since May 8, 2026 the Department of War has published UAP files in six batches at war.gov/UFO, the latest on September 18, 2026 (Department of War, sixth release). The National Archives adds agency records to its UAP collection on a rolling basis (archives.gov).
A whistleblower holds proof of alien encounters going back decades.Former intelligence officer David Grusch testified under oath on July 26, 2023 that he had been told of a crash retrieval program. Those are his claims (hearing transcript). The Pentagon's AARO reviewed the record back to 1945 and found no evidence that any sighting was extraterrestrial technology or that anyone had reverse-engineered alien craft (AARO, March 8, 2024).
Roswell, 1947, was a real crash that was covered up.The Air Force tied the Roswell debris to Project Mogul, a classified balloon program. Some witnesses dispute that. See the Roswell file.
Craft drop into the ocean and keep their speed.Navy aircrew have described objects near the sea surface, including the 2004 Nimitz case (the Nimitz file). No official report has confirmed a craft moving from air into water.
Governments are hiding contact with non-human beings.Every official report so far, including NASA's 2023 study and AARO's report for fiscal 2025, found no evidence of extraterrestrial technology. AARO logged 319 new reports in that year and put every resolved case down to ordinary causes (AARO FY2025 report; NASA).
A disclosure law forces the truth out.A reduced records law passed in December 2023 inside the defense bill. The fuller UAP Disclosure Act passed the House on July 22, 2026 and still needs the Senate (Rep. Burlison). See the disclosure timeline.

What is real in 2026

The real events are slower and stranger in their own way. They are paperwork, and most of it describes things nobody could identify.

  • February 19, 2026. The President posted on Truth Social that he would direct agencies to identify and release government files on UAP, UFOs and alien life. It was a post. No executive order has been found. See did Trump sign a UFO executive order?
  • May 8, 2026. The Department of War published its first batch of 162 files under a program called PURSUE, the Presidential Unsealing and Reporting System for UAP Encounters (Stars and Stripes). The site describes them as unresolved cases.
  • July 21, 2026. AARO published its fiscal 2025 report, months late, with 319 new reports.
  • July 22, 2026. The House adopted the UAP Disclosure Act as part of its 2027 defense bill.

What about The Age of Disclosure?

The Age of Disclosure is a different film. It is a documentary directed by Dan Farah that premiered at SXSW and was released on Prime Video and in select theaters on November 21, 2025 (Motion Picture Association). It presents interviews with current and former officials, among them Luis Elizondo and Jay Stratton, and describes itself as the story of an 80-year cover-up of non-human intelligent life and secret efforts to reverse-engineer its technology.

Those are the film's claims. It does not show physical evidence that anyone outside can test, which is the main criticism in Michael Shermer's review for Skeptic. The official findings above point the other way. The two films share a word and a subject, and they are separate productions.

Why this matters if you only watched a movie

A good film leaves a feeling behind. For some people that feeling is dread, a sense that something is about to be announced. If that is you, it helps to know what the record actually holds, and disclosure anxiety is a real and common reaction.

It also helps to know what you would do if a real sighting happened near you. The film makes that minute look like a chase. In life it is quieter: note the time, record wide, keep your distance, write it down.
